Marine and Coastal Conservation Program - Kefalonia, Greece.
Since 2012, this project has been actively involved in conservation and research on the Greek island of Kefalonia. While working to protect sea turtles, the team has monitored changes in beach profiles over time due to both human and environmental impacts. Because sea turtles are part of both coastal and marine ecosystems, the research has expanded to include studies of the protected Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and sand dune systems, both of which are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Not only are these ecosystems vital nesting and foraging grounds for endangered sea turtles, but they also serve as important biomarkers for climate change and much more!
Join this inspiring Marine and Coastal Conservation Program to help protect the large Posidonia seagrass meadows and sand dune systems found around the stunning island of Kefalonia. Gain hands-on research experience, discover the rich marine life thriving in Posidonia habitats, and explore the critical role of sand dunes in addressing climate change.

The program runs from June through September, with start dates every second Thursday until the end of the season. Volunteers will be directly involved in field research, conducted to scientific standards so the data can be used in environmental studies. You'll build your teamwork and leadership skills while working alongside like-minded people and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting dune and Posidonia ecosystems. You'll also develop a stronger awareness of current climate challenges and their impact on both marine and terrestrial environments.
Volunteers will spend most of their time exploring the Posidonia seagrass meadows and studying the extensive sand dune systems. You'll learn about the species living in each environment, create topographical maps, and gain insight into the environmental pressures these ecosystems face.
In addition, you'll help keep Kefalonia's beaches free from litter and debris, take part in drone-based research, and review the images collected after each flight. There’s plenty of free time each day and on most evenings to relax or join in on group activities like movie nights and quizzes. You’ll also have two full days off per week.
Please note: This project fills up quickly, so we recommend booking early to secure your spot.
Our program focuses on the Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and the coastal sand dunes of southeastern Kefalonia, particularly around the Mounda Peninsula. Seagrass meadows are more effective carbon sinks than rainforests and play a key role in mitigating climate change. They also provide essential habitat and nursery grounds for many marine species. Meanwhile, sand dunes form a dynamic barrier between land and sea, creating a specialised ecosystem that is increasingly under threat from development and erosion.

Using drone technology, both coastal and marine research areas are regularly surveyed. You don’t need to have drone experience, you’ll receive training and get the chance to see how drones are used in modern environmental science. Aerial surveys over the sea help locate seagrass meadows and guide snorkelling expeditions. Along the coast, drones are used to create topographic and 3D maps of dune systems, allowing researchers to track ecosystem changes over time.
Snorkelling teams will survey nearshore areas and collect geotagged photos of seagrass beds. These images are later analysed to identify species and assess meadow health.
Coastal dune systems will be mapped and studied through beach profiling and plant identification surveys, including evaluations of dune conditions and trends. The team will also monitor the presence of plastics and other pollutants in both marine and coastal environments.
The data collected by this project contributes to one of the most detailed datasets on coastal and marine ecosystems in the area.
Below is an overview of what a typical two-week period might look like and the tasks you'll be involved in.

See the example schedule above for an indication of typical working hours.
There are at least two permanent staff members working year-round, with additional seasonal staff joining between April and November. The permanent team coordinates both project sites, oversees scientific research, supports volunteer training, and delivers educational presentations. They also ensure all volunteer activities are carried out safely and effectively.
*All staff members have previously volunteered on this project.
English is spoken throughout the project.
This project runs from June to September.
Volunteers stay in shared apartments within a large villa set among fruit and olive trees, offering plenty of shade and a relaxed outdoor BBQ area.
Each room accommodates up to four people (mixed gender), with shared bathroom facilities, a kitchenette, and a small living area.
The accommodation is ideally located between the two main project areas. Skala’s lively beach is around a 2.3 km walk away, while the quieter Mounda Beach is approximately 1.5 km away.
All activities are based on-site, including accommodation. Volunteers typically cycle to the beaches, and transport is provided for harbour shifts in Argostoli.
We provide transfers on your arrival and departure dates from Kefalonia Airport (EFL), or from the bus stations in Argostoli or Lixouri (depending on your field station).
Arrival details must be provided at least two weeks before your start date.
We don’t run fixed pickup times, as transfers depend on volunteer arrival times, which can vary due to flights, weather, and other factors. There are often multiple volunteers arriving on similar flights, so transfers are usually well coordinated.
There’s plenty to explore in your downtime. We encourage you to check out the optional trips available, there are some incredible experiences to enjoy in your free time. And when you’re in such a beautiful destination, it’s the perfect opportunity to see more of the country.
Chanel has been working in sea turtle conservation since 2010, driven by a passion for wildlife conservation and scientific research. Her dedication to protecting endangered species has helped raise awareness of key environmental issues.
She meets all volunteers on arrival and delivers an introduction to sea turtle biology and conservation. She’s always happy to answer questions about the turtles and the project.
For the Marine and Coastal Conservation Program on the beautiful island of Kefalonia, Greece, we are looking for motivated and dedicated volunteers who want to contribute to the protection of fragile marine and coastal ecosystems. This project offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on research experience while making a real and lasting impact on the conservation of these important environments.
This project is open to volunteers aged 18 and over, including young travellers as well as those 50+ who are looking for a meaningful travel experience.
Passion for conservation
A genuine interest in protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, particularly sea turtles, seagrass meadows and sand dunes.
Physical fitness
You’ll need to be comfortable cycling and walking long distances along the beach, including in warm conditions. Snorkelling experience is a bonus but not essential.
Flexibility and adaptability
Willingness to work in changing conditions and stay in shared accommodation with other volunteers.

As a volunteer, you’ll play an active role in protecting vital marine and coastal ecosystems while gaining valuable field experience in conservation and environmental research. You’ll work alongside a passionate team and develop new skills, including the use of drones for environmental monitoring and assisting with snorkel-based research.
Outside of project work, you’ll enjoy life on the stunning island of Kefalonia, build friendships with like-minded travellers, and create memories that will stay with you long after you return home.
If you’re passionate about conservation and ready to contribute to the protection of sea turtles and fragile coastal environments in a hands-on, inspiring setting, this project is the perfect fit.
Together, we can make a lasting impact on these incredible ecosystems.
We completely understand that having your child volunteer overseas can feel like a big step. In fact, it’s often just as exciting for parents as it is for the young person themselves, and sometimes even a little more nerve-racking. That’s why we want to reassure you that your child is in good hands.
Since 2004, we’ve been supporting volunteers and have guided many young people through meaningful international experiences.
We take safety seriously. That begins with carefully selecting our partner organisations, volunteer projects, and host families. Every placement is thoroughly checked to make sure it meets our high standards for safety, support, and ethical practices.
Our experienced and caring local contacts are always there to support volunteers throughout their journey. From clear pre-departure preparation to personal assistance during the project, we’re available to help whenever needed.
We believe strongly in open communication. You're always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns. We’re here not only for the volunteers, but for their families too.
You can feel confident knowing we are fully committed to creating a safe, supportive, and positive experience. Your child’s wellbeing, safety, and overall happiness are our top priorities.
If there's anything you’d like to ask or talk through, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you every step of the way.
