When I was 25, I went to Peru with Volunteer Worldwide. As part of my studies in Global Development Issues, I had the chance to travel to a developing country to complete my internship. It didn’t take me long to decide where to go, I knew I wanted to be in Peru. I’ve always been drawn to South America, and I was keen to learn Spanish while I was there.

I ended up in Cusco, a city in the interior of Peru at the edge of the Amazon rainforest. Much of Cusco is built on ancient Inca ruins, and it’s also the city closest to Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The city relies heavily on tourism, which is partly why I chose to work at a school, teaching the students English. Language skills provide a better opportunity for their future.

I also found sponsors in my home country, the Netherlands. With this money, I was able to renovate a classroom. I did this during my last week, so now the school has two classrooms instead of one.
I spent six weeks working in Cusco and living with a host family. They were incredibly kind people who took their responsibility for me seriously. One of the most memorable moments of the trip was when the father of my host family showed me his coin collection. It was his hobby. Here in the Netherlands, many people feel the need to buy happiness through new phones, laptops, and other things. This man was happy with his coin collection. It was a beautiful reminder against the Western, materialistic mindset that tries to combine money with happiness.
I experienced Volunteer Worldwide as an open, friendly, and warm organisation that is very supportive of its volunteers. Before, during, and after the experience, they are always there for you. In my view, the price is also reasonable, making it an accessible and approachable organisation.
