Chios Dog Project - May 2024
In the last two weeks of May 2024, I had the chance to care for the animals at the dog project on Chios. At that time, there were about 20 dogs, and in the last few days, I even brought in a cat I had met near the rubbish, with a large wound on his cheek. I had known the project for a year and had visited several times before. It’s set in a beautiful, peaceful location, and I loved the sound of a donkey in the morning, walks to the waterfall, the nearby little church, and the unexpected visit of a fox in the evening. Absolutely stunning!

Most of the dogs live in kennels next to the house, and during the day, the doors are opened so they can play together within the enclosures. It was already getting very hot at that time, so I got up early in the morning to start cleaning, feeding, and giving them water. Each dog is a friendly creature: you can enter any kennel without fear. Some dogs are shy, but they all enjoy a bit of attention, a kind word, a pat, or a tasty treat. It’s wonderful to see how they gradually learn to trust you.
The large house is home to dogs that need extra care, due to injuries, illness, or simply to socialise. A few also stayed on the veranda. Logistically, it can be challenging with doors opening and closing while you carry a tray of medicine in pieces of sausage past a group of drooling, jumping dogs who also want to come inside. I laughed a lot, enjoyed myself, and learned a lot. It’s definitely not a brilliant idea to hang your underwear on the washing line where bored dogs can reach it!

I’ve never seen so much dog poo in my life, but I happily scooped, wrestled with hoses, and cuddled endlessly. There’s still plenty of time to explore this unique, characterful island. If you go and I absolutely recommend it! Don’t forget to try licking a Masticha tree in the south, eat at Vradipus in the old town, and swim at the little chapel of Agios Isidoris.
